Palliative medicine

Palliative medicine supports and cares for people with advanced, incurable illnesses and their relatives. This may include people with cancer, but also those with chronic lung, heart and kidney diseases or advanced neurological conditions. The goal is to improve and maintain quality of life by relieving physical and psychological symptoms. Symptom control and relief, as well as close support for patients and their relatives, are essential treatment goals. Your wishes and goals are central to this care.

Palliative care can take place at home with support from general (AAPV) or specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV), or as inpatient care on a palliative ward.

Bereaved relatives can receive support through grief counseling. There are also many self-help resources for those affected and their families. Helpful self-care practices include mindfulness exercises, progressive muscle relaxation and autogenic training.
