What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
An overview of the diagnostic system, concept of health and five pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
MoreA TCM diagnosis is the basis for successful treatment with Traditional Chinese Medicine methods. In addition to a detailed medical history and interview, pulse and tongue diagnosis are essential.
Alongside the main reason for your visit and physical symptoms, your life circumstances as well as autonomic and emotional complaints are taken into account. An individualized treatment plan is then created—often combining therapies such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
By palpating the three radial pulse positions in a standardized way, qualitative characteristics are assessed in addition to pulse rate. The height, width and length of the pulse wave, as well as its strength and tension, provide information about pulse quality and the patient’s energetic state.
The shape, color and appearance of the tongue body and coating are assessed visually. Areas of the tongue correspond to functional systems. Tongue diagnosis helps evaluate a patient’s energetic constitution—for example, a light, pale and swollen tongue body can indicate a lack of active forces.
